EU role in world water day celebration in Ghana

Published 11th March 2011 - 2 comments - 2101 views -

The world water day is here again. Time to take stocks of the water policies, implementation and initiate new plans to continue the unfinished water expansion and exploration businesses.

This year's celebration is under the theme "water for cities: responding to the urban challenge, is aimed to spotlight and encourage governments, organisations communities, and individuals to actively engage in addressing the defy of urban water management.

the world water day 2011 is to focus international attention on the impact of rapid urban population growth, industralization and uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters on urban water systems.

Today's 11th March 2011 page of the Daily Graphic newspaper, the European Union sponsored advert under the heading "2011 world water day celebration" intends to involve the younger generation to mark the activities of the day.

the activities includes school debates, health walk, easy competitons radio and TV talk shows feature articles and editorials in news papers and radion.

The urban water situation is increasing becoming concern to many particularly the urban poor and the theme seems to be appropriate. However, those in dire need of water are those at our rural communities whose dams, streams, rivers and tributaries have since dried up. these people who are already poor are going through difficulty conditions relating to water access, quality and availability and should be given the needed attention.

there is also the need for policy makers to refocus their attention to providing rural communities portable drinking water, the situation which was contributing to increase in poverty level among them.

Just hoping the governments f various nations would focus on providing this necessary resource. the world water day should also be used to highligt the real situation and effects of climate change and the need for mitigation and adaptation measures
